Over 100 Overdoses in 3 Days,
But Not from Heroin

Emergency entrance

102 people overdosing in 3 days in just one county is enough to grab one’s attention. With the heroin overdose being as bad as it is, it would not be a surprise to hear those overdoses were coming from heroin. But the ODs were not in fact caused by heroin…. they were caused by synthetic marijuana.

Synthetics marijuana is a drug that has been on the rise even with real marijuana becoming decriminalized in more and more states. The name synthetic weed is somewhat misleading. Since weed itself commonly does not have serious side effects, one may think the same of synthetic weed, however it is known to cause some significant effects, such as:

  • Rapid or elevated heart rate
  • Intense hallucinations or psychotic episodes
  • Tremors, muscle spasms and seizures
  • Nausea
  • Extreme irritability or mood swings
  • Restlessness
  • Paranoia or anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Hypertension

The DEA has been fighting to keep these drugs off the shelves of gas stations and convenience stores throughout the US. Though their efforts have made these drugs harder to find in certain areas, they have been unable to stop the supply. The drug composition is constantly changed to prevent its chemical composition from being banned.

There is no shortage of dangerous drugs on the streets today. Luckily there is also no shortage of treatment options. There is no time like right now to figure out how to save your loved one. There is hope for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.
