Problems of Drug Treatment

Woman suffering

Each time someone uses drugs or alcohol, they are essentially poisoning their bodies. This mainly goes unnoticed for the duration of their abuse. Drugs take the person out of what is happening right in front of them and puts all of their attention on the euphoric feeling they get from the substance. When not high, they experience the complete opposite effect, which is the craving or agonizing withdrawal symptoms which come with the use.

People spend years going back and forth between these two things, either overcoming the need for substances or succumbing to their addiction. There are different ideologies which may handle it for those who are able to overcome it. No matter what the case, the first thing which needs to be addressed is the individual actually coming off the drugs and or alcohol. They will need to fully detox off of the drugs.

Then there is a multitude of things that need to be addressed in order to get someone completely drug free; from the type of people they hang around, to the way the person actually feels about themselves, as well as how to get rid of the baggage that just naturally comes from years of drug abuse. The person will probably have a lot of bad habits in life whether or not it is stealing, lying or cheating. Hopefully while in treatment, they will go through a process where they start to rediscover who they are and will come to realize the person they have always been underneath without the drugs in their life.

The next thing to address would be any trauma their drug use could have caused; bad relationships, fights, overdose and other situations which may have occurred. Most of the time, the person will just think these are things that just happen to them, so they have to be brought to the point where they see their cause in those situations. Once that point has been reached, can they start to take full responsibility for their actions.

This is also where honesty starts to come into play. If an addict can be honest with themselves and the people around them, they are not only able to start to really change their way of thinking and the way they look at things but also become honest with others in their lives and start to repair relationships that have been torn up due to years of living wrong.

In conclusion, the way to actually help someone get off drugs is to get them back to the state they were in before they ever used drugs; happy with who they are in their own skin and able to take responsibility for themselves and the effects they have created.
