Schools are out, people are leaving on vacations and there will be a lot of swimming and fun in the sun. During these months, alcohol consumption increases and can result in a summer specific side effect of drinking alcohol. Since alcohol is a diuretic, water will be lost from the body through urination with more water lost than is being consumed. The person may also drink even more alcohol to quench their thirst. However, this results in yet more dehydration.

The chances of becoming both dehydrated and incoherent increases as a person gets more intoxicated. If a person were to drink 200 ml of beer, they would not urinate 200 ml of water, but 320 ml of water. The additional 120 ml of water is the dehydration loss. (200 ml is the equivalent of 6.7 ounces and a standard beer can is 12 ounces.) This can lead to heat exhaustion and may lead to alcohol poisoning as well (for those who continue to drink alcohol to quench their thirst).

With these possible dangers, the chance of summer accidents also increase. Drowning, boating accidents, and any other summer sports and outdoor activity accidents become inevitable when alcohol enters the mix.
