Washington Drug Information

The drug abuse situation in Washington is complex and extensive. There’s no major class of drug that is not a significant problem in the state.

Marijuana has been legal for medical use for several years and was recently approved for recreational use by adults. Together with methamphetamine, these two drugs pose the most serious problems to the state. Both drugs are not only addictive and involved in many treatment admissions, both generate high rates of crime.

There are many indoor and outdoor marijuana grows in the state, and more marijuana comes across the border from British Columbia. Prescription drug diversion, especially painkillers, is an increasing risk and is related to the increase in use of heroin in the state as people look for a cheaper source of drugs. Mexican traffickers are mostly responsible for the supply of heroin that is sending an increasing number of people to rehab.

Cocaine is still a significant threat, while in many other states, its presence is dwindling. Supplies found in Washington are sometimes destined for Canada or Alaska.

Synthetic drugs such as Spice (K2), methylone and bath salts also pose local threats to life and health.
