Could a Chicken Nugget
Get You High?

Chicken Nugget

Alright well first off we know this sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it may not be as far fetched as you think. Just last month one farm company had a lawsuit filed against them for allegedly giving their chickens ketamine…

Alright so most likely if you eat a piece of that chicken, you would not end up high on ketamine, but could that ever be possible? In order to answer this question, Gizmodo’s Daniel Kolitz reaches out to a number of experts in food safety and chemistry. The answer he got was a little more complicated than just a yes or no.

To put it simply, it is technically possible, but very unlikely. For this to happen the animal would have to ingest a significant amount of the drug and then be processed before it could excrete the drug. Though with narcotics this would still probably never be enough to cause a high or a heroin addiction for instance. However, it could cause some effect in the case where it was a drug that humans are sensitive to and was ingested by someone who was sick, elderly or a child.

More so, what is a threat is not narcotics, but antibiotics that many have claimed cause the growth of antibiotic-resistant illnesses. There are several steps in place, however, to prevent over medicated meat and dairy from hitting the shelf.
