Drug Needle Vending Machines

 Vending Machine

I remember my first sip of alcohol and my first hit of weed. I remember my first of everything as well as my last. But what is foggy is all the times I used drugs in between those times. I never imagined being a drug addict but I became one and lived that lifestyle for five years.

Those were my most challenging of times in more ways than just one. I compromised myself and did things I never imagined I would do. The desperation I possessed when I was in need of a high was frightening. If I would have continued down that path, I am unsure just how far I would have gone to get high.

Drug addicts take risks in many ways. Using in itself is risky due to the fact of not knowing what’s actually in the drugs. It could be cut with any number of things. More and more, addicts are in danger and while the focus should be on treatment and reducing relapses for those in recovery, we discover something else……

Currently in Las Vegas, Nevada vending machines are being placed in three separate locations. But this time you won’t find the typical snack, candy or soda in these machines. Those treats have been replaced with a clean drug needle kit equipped with band-aids, alcohol wipes and a needle disposal box that can be returned at the vending machine. All that is required is the individual getting the needles signs up with their birthday and initials to limit each person from wiping out the machine. Each person is limited to 2 kits a week each containing 10 needles.

Since the announcement of vending machines, there has been a significant amount of dispute. I’ve heard some comments on the matter about how this promotes drug addiction. Statistically, it has been shown by the Center of Disease Control that needle exchange programs are beneficial. With that being said, the best way to actually help those who are struggling with addiction is to get them treatment.

Go to the grocery store, the gas station, or the doctor and you can find drugs. There is addiction all around us, every day. Instead of putting our noses up and disagreeing with some type of harm reduction, educate yourselves. Know the signs of addiction and the different types of addiction. The only way to really solve the problem at hand is with a rehabilitation program. Addicts come in all different forms. The person struggling the most with addiction could also look like any average Joe. So learn the signs and know where to send them if it’s needed. Knowing that could help save a life.
