PCP—A State of Deadly Psychosis

For many years, people have been abusing synthetic substances without even knowing the chemicals that go in them. I was one of those people and in all actuality, a synthetic drug it was the first drug I ever tried. Very recently, a man smoked marijuana laced with PCP due to the voices he claimed to be hearing, he killed one person and left 23 others injured in the heart of Times Square in New York City.

Now over my years, I had been addicted to many substances from marijuana to heroin, I did it all. I was fearless when it came to in-taking substances into my body in any way I felt suitable. However, there was one drug that scared me half to death.

I remember one night at my home in Algiers, New Orleans I had smoked about a gram of weed and PCP rolled into a cigar paper by myself. Twenty minutes went by before the extreme psychological effects of the drug started to kick in. I remember running downstairs into one of the bathrooms and vomiting a pink liquid, which freaked me out. I then began hearing voices telling me it was too late and I was going to die.

I ran back upstairs and turned on uplifting music in an attempt to drain out the voices, but the louder I turned up the music, the louder the voices grew. I was at a point of insanity and thought about putting a drill to my head to let the voices out. I was now about an hour into whatever was happening and in a last resort to escape the thoughts of suicide and intense apathy, I got down on my knees and began praying.

With tears running down my face, I begged God to let me come down from whatever twisted high this was and I promised to never do it again. After about 10 minutes, I fell asleep in a fetal position on the floor. I woke up several hours later, still in shock and disbelief. Thankfully, I made it out without causing serious injury to myself or anyone else.

Before the crackdown and ban in 2011 of synthetic marijuana, there were less psychotic related incidents. Due to a number of times, the banned chemicals in these bags of spice have had to be changed in order to loophole through legality has created dangerous reactions. The chemicals are unstable, unpredictable, and often deadly.

There have been many cases throughout the world of people becoming completely psychotic within hours of intaking this drug as well as smoking PCP. Some also don’t know of the actual withdrawal symptoms that one has when no longer smoking the spice or PCP. If you have been smoking either for a while and the devastating psychosis hasn’t affected you yet, then you will be thrown into this state during the withdrawal. This drug affects people in schools who play sports, people that work decent jobs, and those who have to pass drug tests. High doses of PCP can cause seizures, coma, and even death due to the consequence of accidental injury or suicide while under the effects of the drug.

More than 3 percent of high school students in the U.S had stated they used PCP at least once in their lifetime (PCP Stat). In our schools, it was stated that in the U.S 14% of male students and 8% of female students had tried K2 or spice (K2 Stat). Society as a whole is always trying to find ways to get high and go around the system of being caught, but when will we stop?

The more we experiment with these chemicals the more dangerous it becomes to get high. People are overdosing and dying on various drugs every day, and the people smoking synthetic weed are killing those around them because they are no longer anchored in reality.

Next time you want to get that legal high, ask yourself. Will I be the cause of my own or someone else’s death before I come down from this high? Will I ever come down from this high?
