Small Town Problems

West Virginia’s Overdose Epidemic

Forest path

Since the cocaine cowboys in the 80s, to the rise of the internet drug dealer in the early 2000s, drugs have always found a way to make it into the hands of consumers. When many picture West Virginia they see rolling hills or a myriad of dangling autumn leaves. Not drug addiction and it comes to a surprise for many that West Virginia is leading the nation in deaths by overdose.

Jake Tighe is a Correctional Officer at the local jail in Romney, WV and had this to say about what he has seen.

“You see that many of the people here just don’t have the resources to make a living or create a career for themselves. You have the Chicken Plant, local gas station,
and service industries. That’s it. These people have to make at least
an hour and 30 minute commute a day for decent work.
They feel stuck and drugs are an easy escape.”

While you can clearly see the affects addiction has had in WV, this problem is mirrored in small towns all across the country. It brings up a great point regarding addiction. The focus has always been to get someone off drugs but what about keeping them off?

Treatment should cover all aspects of rehabilitating someone’s life and that includes how they will survive when they leave. When looking for treatment for a loved there is much to be gained from finding a facility that can provide a comprehensive battle plan for the future.
