Drugs Destroy Creativity

Creativity block

“There is a misconception among creative types that drugs assist creative output. While drugs may initially make a person feel more productive or less inhibited, over time, there is a possibility they feel unable to produce without first ingesting more drugs. This is called state-dependency. Speaking from my own experience, I can recall using formidable quantities of prescription stimulants, mainly Adderall abuse during my freshman year in art college.

“I justified my drug addiction with my large workload, and I also noticed that my creative output was higher and more focused when I took the pills. Unfortunately, there came a day when the pills ran out and I felt like I couldn’t create anymore, at least not to the level to which I had grown accustomed. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. I was obviously conscious of the fact I could create without using stimulants because I had before, but I no longer felt confident in my ability. State-dependency can really undermine a person and cause them to question their abilities. If you or anybody you know is struggling with this, now is the time to seek help.”
