Should Xanax Prescriptions be Restricted?

Alabama pharmacists are trying to fight a decision to impose additional restriction’s on the prescribing of Xanax in the state. Alabama would be the first state in the United States to enforce such tight restrictions on the medication.

It would be moved from its current category into the same category as powerful opioids: methadone, oxycodone, and fentanyl.

“There is copious evidence that Xanax is dangerous and highly addictive,” wrote Dr. David Herrick, a physician who serves on the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.

While some are outraged, is this a bad idea?

Australia increased the restriction on Xanax back in 2014 and a study found the new restrictions were effective. Since then, calls to the poison control hotline involving Xanax dropped by 50%.
