Companies in the U.S. Lose $100 Billion per Year Due to Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Company Money Loss

About.com reports, “The loss to companies in the United States due to alcohol and drug-related abuse by employees totals $100 billion a year, according to the The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information.” Costs can be measured in the expense of absenteeism, injuries, health insurance claims, loss of productivity, employee morale, theft and fatalities.

“According to NCADI statistics, alcohol and drug users:

  • Are far less productive.
  • Use three times as many sick days.
  • Are more likely to injure themselves or someone else.
  • Are five times more likely to file worker’s compensation claims.”

This is yet another pressing reason why we MUST be agressive in addressing addiction…. the ruined lives, stolen items, crimes committed, as well as the lost time at work and health insurance claims. The actual cost of addiction is probably not truly estimated and possibly exceeds reported statistics.

The reality is that no one wants to be a drug addict. There has never been a man or woman who aspired to achieve the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Besides job loss there is depression, anxiety, liver disease, divorce, child custody issues, violence, malnutrition, homelessness, loss of friendships, car accidents, jail, STD’s, criminal activity, shame, anger, fear, loneliness, and absolute hopelessness. By the time an addict and his family have decided it is time to make a change, that change seems all but impossible to achieve.

Addicts often wonder if it’s possible to pull out of the mess they have created. It is overwhelming to say the least.
