Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon

Millions of people in the US grew up with Red Ribbon Week in their schools, where they were educated about the dangers of drug abuse. However, many never learned the history of the week, how it started or the pledge of those involved.

During a time when drug addiction of every type is at an all-time high in our country, we want to educate everyone on the importance of Red Ribbon Week and how it all started.

Red Ribbon week was started in 1985 in response to a tragedy as it was founded in memory of a DEA agent who lost his life. Enrique Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who lost his life fighting illegal drugs. When leaving the DEA office in Mexico to meet his wife for lunch, he was abducted by five men and was found dead one month later after being brutally tortured. The outrage of his death sparked the beginning of Red Ribbon Week.

Today, millions of children, parents, and educators celebrate Red Ribbon Week every year. This year many children will learn the dangers of drug abuse for the first time in an effort to safeguard them and their families from the horrors of drug addiction.

There are five parts to the Red Ribbon Week pledge:

  1. As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.
  2. We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.
  3. We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.
  4. We will monitor our children’s behavior and enforce appropriate consequences so that our rules are respected.
  5. We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse. redribbon.org
