A Powerful New Opiate

100x more powerful than Fetanyl

A powerful new drug called W-18 is on the rise in Canada. W-18 is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and fentanyl is 100 times more potent then morphine. Throughout Calgary, Canada only one seizure has been made of the drug but officials believe there is more to come. The drug has a distinctive chemical structure not closely related to other established families of opiod drugs. For those of not familiar with chemical compositions, it is a synthetic opioid made to look like fentanyl pills. The problem with this is that because of the potency and inconsistency of how it’s made, the slightest alteration can mean you’re looking at the difference between feeling high and death by overdose.

One W-18 pill may have only one milligram of fentanyl in it and another may have three milligrams. Now add another substance to the fentanyl that is one hundred times more toxic and you are playing with fire. Along with this, heroin may also be laced with fentanyl. Heroin users who become interested due to the content are at a higher risk as they may inject this deadly chemical.

Overdose death rates have sky rocketed in the past few years. From 2000 to 2014 the overdose death rate has increased tremendously. In 2014, there were 47,550 fatal overdoses. Of all of those, 61% were due to opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.

Although there has only been one seizure of W-18, there is reason to believe there will be more. As any drug goes, it spreads and it spreads fast. Nearly have a million lives have been lost to opioids. And now, there is a new drug that many don’t have any knowledge or information on and one that greatly increases the likelihood of more overdose deaths.

In the case that someone you know is abusing opiates it is extremely important to seek help before it is too late. Those who use opiates are at a high risk of not only legal prosecution but also overdose.
