Weed Isn’t Harmless Anymore

States with legalized recreational use of marijuana have become very competitive. As a result, many growers have begun to ditch growing for medical purposes and instead are growing with the goal of higher THC content.

“As far as potency goes, it’s been surprising how strong a lot of the marijuana is,” says researcher and study lead Andy LaFrate. “We’ve seen potency values close to 30 percent THC, which is huge.”

Potency used to be around 10%, if not lower on average and this doesn’t include wax. Wax is THC extract made through the use of butane to separate the substances. The substance is known for being much more potent than regular marijuana and the side effects are quite different.

Even some avid marijuana users are concerned by the trend of dabbing or smoking wax. It can cause rapid heartbeat, blackouts, psychosis paranoia and hallucinations. In addition, it is faster acting and causes a rapid, very intense high and can actually cause a pretty rapid tolerance build up like with other drugs, driving the user to take more for the same high. Many proponents for marijuana scream it is non-addictive.

On our helpline chat system, I had the following conversation with a young lady earlier today. She chose to remain anonymous, but this is what she had to say.

You might think, this is an isolated incident, however, you would be wrong. Each day we are seeing an increasing number of people looking into treatment for themselves, trying to get off of marijuana. In fact, another thing that has been said by marijuana advocates may be no longer true, which is the idea that marijuana has no withdrawal effects.

Just yesterday I talked to a young man who had quit smoking for 3 days before smoking again. He said he couldn’t sleep, felt anxious, had no appetite and had restless limbs. The information was shocking to me because those symptoms are clear signs of a withdrawal, even to the point of being similar to what people withdrawing from heroin feel though at a much more extreme level.

Whether it is marijuana abuse or addiction to another substance, get your loved ones the treatment they need. Today so many life-threatening drugs are out there and many times are mixed in with other substances. We are available 24/7 to make it as easy as possible for your loved one to get the treatment they need.
