Missouri Police Unveil Permanent Drug Disposal Unit

Community activists and Nixa, Missouri police are increasing their efforts to curb prescription drug abuse by installing a permanent medication take-back box inside police headquarters. The box is one of ten in the state awarded by the Missouri Youth/Adult Alliance. Nixa was selected as a result of an application from the newly-formed Reduce the Abuse Christian County Coalition in Nixa.

In the last three years, Nixa had experienced three teenage fatalities from prescription drug overdoses. After losing a high school football player to prescription drug overdose, the school district and police department hosted drug take-back days so unused, unwanted or expired medications could be collected and destroyed. Now, this new drop box is the first permanent solution in Nixa and one of two in southwest Missouri.

The other was awarded to Branson, Missouri by their police department. Branson officials stated that the drop box is not only a way to prevent drug abuse but it also helps keep communities healthier overall. There is such a misconception among both children and adults that medications a doctor prescribes are always safe. But if you abuse it by taking more than directed, you are breaking the law and risking your life.
