How Problems Grow with Addiction

Lots of questions

How often does something have to come up as a problem for you before you do something about it? Once, twice, three times? How often do you find yourself blowing off a problem till later because it’s easier to push off then face it? Then, have you ever had that problem build up because you blew it off? Credit card bills, a school paper, or project at work?

Imagine what your everyday problems would look like if you put everything off for a year or several years. That is what it is like when you fall into addiction. Everything takes a back seat to the drug use. The problems grow while they're just focused on using. For most addicts, losing jobs, dropping out of school or destroying their credit is a risk they are willing to take in pursuit of a fix.

When addicts get sober, the damage they have done to their life comes back to them at once. Therefore, addicts need help early in recovery to address these problems, the life situations which contributed to their use and were exponentially worsened as they continued to use. However, despite their overwhelm, they still must handle the problems that have grown while they were getting high.

Treatment should handle the underlying issues of why someone began using in the first place. Then, the addict needs to be helped to plan out how to handle other problems they have; whether it is going back to school, finding a job to start paying down debt, and/or repairing the relationships their drug abuse destroyed.
