Vet Faces Justice for Implanting Puppies with Drugs

Puppy

A case that started almost ten years ago has once again come forward and is finally close to a resolution. The charges: surgically implanting six puppies with liquid heroin. The dogs were then shipped to the US as drug mules.

The end of this story is not a happy ending, but now at least there may be justice. Andres Lopez Elores, a veterinarian went on the run after he was found to be using his clinic in the US to remove the packages from the dogs surgically.

The DEA and agents in Columbia uncovered the scene resulting in 22 Columbian nationals getting arrested. However, Elores escaped and was on the run until he was apprehended in Spain in 2015. So why is this news now?

This week, the Spain national court authorized extradition for Elores to stand trial in America for his crime. US Attorney Richard P Donoghue had this to say.

“Elores is not only a drug trafficker, but he also betrayed a veterinarian’s pledge to prevent animal suffering when he used his surgical skills in a cruel scheme to smuggle heroin in the abdomens of puppies. Dogs are mans’ best friend and, as the defendant is about to learn, we are drug dealers’ worst enemy.”

Elores faces ten years to life in prison for his charges. As for the puppies, some of them did survive. In fact, if there is any happy ending to this story, it is that one of the six puppies he implanted one has gone on to a big future as a drug dog for the Columbian Police. The dog now works to fight the problem he was dragged into.
