More than 15 Percent of Indiana Babies Drug-Exposed

According to a newly released study, more than 15% of all Indiana babies have been exposed to drugs, a figure matching the national average. In some Indiana counties, however, exposure rates are as high as 25%.

In Tippecanoe, more than 40% of all Department of Child Services cases were opened due to a report of parental drug abuse. Local Indiana infants and toddlers have tested positive for methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana. Officials say that the drugs can get into the kids’ systems in a variety of ways – including through breast milk or by touching the substances and putting it into their mouths.

Drug exposure before birth is just as damaging to these children. Newborns have to struggle through withdrawal in a neonatal intensive care unit. Doctors at a local Indiana hospital said that babies going through withdrawal experience jitteriness, sweating, relentless crying, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased heart rate.
