In the past, heroin addicts in Maine had to drive out of state to get their drugs. By bringing the drug to the customers, drug dealers can charge higher prices and make more profits.
“The appeal is money. The profit margin is so much higher here. A group say in Brooklyn, New York, heroin on the street is maybe $5 for a dose. You can come to Maine and for that same dose, charge $25,” said Scott Pelletier of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
When someone addicted to heroin cannot get the drug, they will start to go through withdrawal. They experience strong cravings, cold sweats, intense body aches and violent vomiting and diarrhea. Addicts become desperate to prevent withdrawal and some will do anything to be able to lay their hands on more heroin.
Heroin is most often seen as a tan or white powder. Some heroin comes in a dark, sticky form called ”black tar heroin.”
Signs of Heroin Use:
- Falling asleep at odd times, being
sleepy or drowsy much of the time
- Needle marks on arms or legs
- Frequently scratching the face, nose or body
- Slurred speech
- Runny nose
- Tiny pupils
- Flushed skin
