New York Drug Abuse Prevention

Drug Abuse Prevention was the topic of the day at a panel hosted by the Manhattan District Attorney and White House officials. The panel brought together these officials with local community leaders, health service organizations and law enforcement agencies to discuss combating drug abuse in New York City neighborhoods. The civic organizations had two main concerns: the increase of prescription drug abuse and the increasing illicit drug use by the youth of New York.

The panel noted the reduction in the destructive effects of illegal drug use in New York City, mostly due to the hard work of law enforcement agencies. At the same time, there is a growing threat of prescription drug abuse. This problem will be addressed vigorously in a widespread campaign that uses all of the resources in the community.

Statistics show 16% of New York residents reported using illicit drugs or medications in the past year. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Program will be used to help families understand how important it is to remove unneeded drugs from the home. The DEA is staging the third National Prescription Drug Take-Back event on October 29, 2011. The prior Take-BackDay in April received 188 tons of unwanted or expired medications to be destroyed.
