Dallas Takes New Approach to Fighting Heroin Abuse

Dallas
Dallas residents know all too well about the heroin problem this city has suffered for years. Several years ago, a suburb of Dallas became well known as the epicenter of a rash of heroin overdoses from a new form of the drug, a crumbly substance nicknamed ”cheese.” The drug became popular with young teens, eventually sending both children and young adults to the hospital.

The drug was made from a mixture of heroin and Tylenol, chopped up together until they resembled parmesan cheese. As any opiate will, it impaired the function of heart and lungs, sometimes resulting in the death of the user.

In recent years, the mixture has fortunately fallen out of popularity. But the news is not all good, as Dallas is now seeing a large number of users addicted to straight heroin. The problem has caught the attention of local law enforcement and they have adapted a new method of approaching the problem. They have posted billboards displaying special police department phone numbers for anonymous phone tips about heroin or prescription drug deals taking place.

A DEA agent with the Dallas task stated:

“Our focus is not necessarily on the user, We want them to get help, but we want their information, so that we can identify their sources of supply, their distributors that are selling this poison to our communities.” – Daniel Salter DEA

Heroin abuse is extremely damaging to an individual, family and community, causing crime to spike. Too many heroin users will lose their lives, often leaving young children behind. The police hope that taking down the supply lines of the addicts in the area will cut down heroin use and encourage the addicted to find help.
