Could Living with an Addict Cost Someone Their House?

Police

It is hard to imagine how life could turn out. One day you’re dealing with a loved one battling drug addiction and the next you’re in a legal battle with the government over your house.

The fact is, having a loved one who is using in your house could land you in hot water legally if that loved one sells drugs to support their habit. You could be under legal forfeiture of your house.

This was the case for Paul and Ruth Derbacher in 1988 when their house was raided, and it was discovered their grandson had been selling drugs out of their house. The prosecution stated the drugs were in plain sight, so the couple must have known of the illicit operation going on at their house. After some time, the couple finally settled with the government and had to sell the house and split any profit with the government.

This means having a loved one who is heavily addicted to drugs can put your property at risk. This is just another reason why not doing anything about a loved one’s drug use is a risk to not only them but to those around them as well.

Protect yourself and your loved ones by doing something about your loved one’s addiction.
