Heroin-Related Deaths Skyrocket

Jackson Square New Orleans
The number of heroin-related deaths in Louisiana has increased almost eight-fold, skyrocketing from 15 in 2010 to 117 in 2013. The streets are flooded with this devastating drug, making it easier to get and tempting those who have never used the drug.

A recently-recovered heroin addict in the area stated that heroin is everywhere now. Out of his friends and acquaintances, he knows anywhere from ten to twenty people selling heroin.

“You are seeing people who would have never even tried heroin try it. It is less expensive [than prescription drugs], it is more available, it is in a purer form which makes it more dangerous,” said Michelle Gaiennie, executive director of Clinical Services Bridge House.

Many people who fall into heroin use started with prescription medication. In many cases, they used the prescription exactly as directed but became dependent on it and eventually migrated to heroin when their money ran out.

It’s vital to know the facts of drugs you are prescribed. Some pills are just as addicting and dangerous as street drugs. Know what are you taking and make sure you know if the drug has the ability to become addictive. The prescribing information for drugs includes instructions on how long that drug can safely be taken. Ask your doctor or pharmacists for the prescribing information for medications you are given.
