(1971-2011). The Weezer bassist died from an overdose of unspecified drugs.

21) Cory Monteith

 (1982-2013). The “Glee” star died from an overdose of heroin.

20) Lisa Robin Kelly

 (1970-2013). The “That 70’s Show” actress died from an overdose of unspecified drugs.

19) Chyna

 (1969-2016). The professional wrestler died from an overdose of prescription drugs.

18) Gustav Elijah Åhr

(1996-2017). Known professionally as Lil Peep. The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner certified the cause of death to be an accidental fentanyl–alprazolam overdose, the latter of which was branded as Xanax.

17) Brittany Murphy

 (1977-2009). The actor’s overdose was a direct result of a combination of pneumonia, an iron deficiency, and intoxication of drugs prescribed for influenza.

16) Tom Petty

 (1950-2017). Tom died of an overdose of Fentanyl, oxycodone, emazepam, alprazolam, citalopram, acetyl fentanyl, and despropionyl fentanyl.

15) Elvis Presley

(1935-1977). The exact cause of the superstar’s death is uncertain, but fourteen drugs were found in his system that were a factor in his death. Some of these drugs include codeine, methaqualone, morphine, meperidine, ethchlorvynol, diazepam and barbiturates.

14) Scott Weiland

(1967-2015). The musician passed away from an accidental overdose of cocaine, ethanol, and 3,4-Methylenedioxyamphetamine.

13) Steve Clark

(1960-1991). The guitarist from Def Leppard died from an accidental overdose of codeine, diazepam, morphine and alcohol.

12) Jimi Hendrix

 (1940-1970). Jimi died from asphyxia while intoxicated on barbiturates.

11) Janis Joplin

 (1943-1970). The musician died from a heroin overdose.

10) John Belushi

 (1949-1983). The comedian passed away from an overdose of cocaine and heroin.

9) River Phoenix

 (1970-1993). The actor died from an overdose of cocaine.

8) Chris Farley

(1964-1997). The comedian died from an overdose of cocaine and morphine.

7) Anna Nicole Smith

 (1967-2007). The model passed away from an overdose of anti-depressants, diazepam, chloral hydrate, oseltamivir, methadone, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and human growth hormone.

 (1958-2016). The musician died from an overdose of fentanyl.

5) Amy Winehouse

 (1983-2011). The singer-songwriter died from alcohol inebriation.

4) Philip Seymour Hoffman

 (1967-2014). The actor died from an overdose of heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamines.

3) Heath Ledger

 (1979-2008). Heath died from an overdose of oxycodone, hydrocodone, alprazolam, diazepam, temazepam and doxylamine.

2) Whitney Houston

 (1963-2012). The singer drowned in her hotel bathtub after an unintended overdose of cocaine.

1) Michael Jackson

 (1958-2009). The pop icon died from an overdose of lorazepam and propofol, administered by his personal physician.


The above-listed persons are celebrities, yet many lives are lost every day in our own neighborhood and families.

Society tends to pay attention to this ever-increasing problem when someone famous dies, but every day, more and more lives are being taken by addiction, and we never hear about. I hope this sheds some light on the stigma that surrounds addiction, and the value of life for that matter.
