Utah Drug Information

Overall, rates of drug and alcohol abuse in Utah stay under the national average. It is surprising then, that the state has the eighth-highest drug overdose rate in America.

Out of nearly three million people, only 700,000 drink alcohol and about half of those binge drink. More drug users use marijuana than any other drug. Annually, 35,000 use cocaine and 92,000 abuse a prescription drug. As with many other parts of the country, the addiction problem so often starts with prescription drug use that gradually turned into an addiction. That addiction has led many people to heroin, which is cheaper and does not require a doctor’s visit.

Methamphetamine is still a significant problem in Utah, although its threat has dropped in many other states. After alcohol, meth is the #2 drug sending people to rehab. In 2005 and 2006, meth treatment admissions almost equalled those of alcohol.

MDMA – also known as Ecstasy and Molly – and designer drugs are a problem along the Wasatch Range, which stretches from Provo to Ogden. These drugs are available through bars, clubs, private parties and raves. Molly can be found not only in night clubs, but also in middle and high schools.

In one recent year, 13,000 Utahans arrived in rehab centers to get help for addiction. Alcohol was claimed as the primary problem drug for almost 5,000, and methamphetamine was in second place with 2,600.

However, approximately 64,000 Utah citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year, along with 113,000 people who needed help with alcoholism.
