Candy protested for promoting marijuana legalization

Parents, city leaders and anti-drug activist of Buffalo City, N.Y. were upset that there is candy shaped like marijuana that is showing up on the shelves of stores in the area.  They were upset because they feel that they are already fighting a battle against high drug abuse rates, so they don’t think doing this candy is very acceptable.

The “Pothead Ring Pots,” and “Pothead Lollipops” are bagged candies that are being distributed to retail stores by the novelty supply company Kalan LP of Philadelphia throughout the suburbs of Lansdowne.  Kids can also get these bags of candy online for $1 for per lollipop and $1.50 for a package of three rings.  The president of the candy company has been quoted as saying that the candy has been on the market six to nine months and in 1,000 stores around the country.  The candies are intended to promote the legalization of marijuana.  The owner says that sales are going pretty well, in his own estimation.  He also reports that this was the first complaint that he has had.

The city council viewed a sample of the candy at its last meeting along with synthetic marijuana drug known as “K2,” which is also in some stores.  A city councilman stated he would refuse to grant licenses to stores in his district that planned to sell the merchandise and he also stated that he would embarrass stores that carry the candy as well as the synthetic marijuana.

The bags of “Pothead Sour Gummy Candy” and lollipops shaped like marijuana leaves contain nothing illegal.  However they feature marijuana leaves with the word “legalize” and a joint-smoking, peace sign-waving user on the package is not only in poor taste but it invites young people to try the real thing.

It is not a good idea to promote that if you do marijuana you will be cool.  City officials are coming out against this item.

There is a line between what you can get away with and what is the responsible thing to do.  Promoting marijuana use is only going to end up sending more and more people to drug rehabs in the long run.  Obviously there are better things this company could be doing that detracting from our society in this manner.
