West Virginia Drug Information

While cocaine was once a serious problem in West Virginia, three times as many people are now abusing prescription painkillers. Four times as many are current users of marijuana.

Marijuana consumption and cultivation is considered a serious drug threat throughout West Virginia. The state consistently ranks among the top ten states for marijuana eradication.

While methamphetamine was long a serious problem in the state, its importance has waned as painkiller and heroin abuse have increased. In remote, rural parts of the state, it still poses a considerable threat, with small meth labs being found by the hundreds.

Pharmaceutical drug abuse and the heroin use that so often follows are the most serious drug threats in West Virginia. Current investigations indicate that diversion of opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone products and diazepam threaten lives throughout the state. Many painkiller abusers in West Virginia have migrated to heroin in recent years, and the government has mounted plans to fight back against this epidemic. As of the summer of 2015, heroin overdoses had tripled over the prior three years.

According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 123,000 West Virginia citizens over the age of 12 reported past month use of an illicit drug.

Additional survey results indicate that 129,000 West Virginia citizens reported abuse of or dependence on drugs or alcohol within the past year.

At any particular time, it’s typical for slightly more than 10,000 West Virginians to be in rehab. In startling contrast to other states, two-thirds are there for drug problems and only one-third for alcohol recovery. In fact, 2010 was the first year that treatment admissions for painkiller addiction exceeded those for alcohol addiction. Third in line was marijuana, with heroin in fourth place.

However, approximately 39,000 West Virginia citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year. Another 93,000 needed help for alcohol dependence and didn’t receive it. This is due in part to the lack of drug rehabilitation centers serving West Virginia and in part due to the fact that most people do not recognize their own problem. If your loved one is one of the West Virginians who needs addiction treatment at an inpatient rehabilitation clinic but has not gotten it, yet, we can help. We have been helping West Virginia residents gain sober, drug-free lives for years.
