Narconon Louisiana Supports MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)

Brain in glass of wiskey

Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded in 1980 by Candy Lightner whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver who was a repeat offender.

The goal of MADD is to reduce drunk driving fatalities. Their efforts have been highly effective in reducing the number of deaths that are directly related to driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Narconon Louisiana supports MADD and its efforts to eradicate drunk driving. To increase the awareness of drunk driving and its effects, some of the Narconon clients enroll in MADD Victim Impact Panels.

The Victim Impact Panel is an awareness program for those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The panel consists of a non-confrontational presentation consisting of the victims of these crimes telling their stories of how an impaired driver changed their life forever.

Through panel presentations, the student experiences the impact of drunk driving through the eyes of:

  • A victim: “The good news was that our daughter was killed instantly.”
  • A rescue professional: “It’s the faces of the children killed by drunk drivers that you never forget.”
  • An offender: “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the lady I killed. And it was all because I chose to drive after drinking.”

As a result of these panels, Narconon clients have a greater understanding of their actions and the consequences of driving impaired.

One Narconon client describes her experience: “I never thought twice about getting behind the wheel of a car when I was drinking. I told myself drinking was the only way I felt normal. Then one day I woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed. I had broken off the front right wheel of my car. To this day, I have no idea what I hit. It is only by the grace of God that it was not a child. The Victim Impact Panel really left an impression on me. To see how my actions could have affected another human being was something I will never forget.” M.M.
