Pawtucket, Rhode Island’s Drug Problem

Map of Rhode Island

The US Drug Enforcement Administration reports that the two most significant problems in Rhode Island are heroin and marijuana. This small state has the country’s highest level of marijuana abuse and one of the most severe heroin problems.

Heroin problems have moved out of Northeast inner cities and have invaded suburbs all over the U.S. Families who never expected to see a heroin problem are losing their teens and young adults to overdose. Times have changed and Rhode Island residents struggle along with millions of other families.

Cocaine is a diminishing problem, while prescription drug abuse is increasing. Of course, because painkillers and heroin are chemically very similar, the abuse of pills often leads to the use of heroin which can then lead to overdose because of the varying potency and purity of heroin. When heroin’s potency is boosted by adding illicitly-produced fentanyl (another opioid painkiller), the strength of the fentanyl always causes lives to be lost.

Methamphetamine is a minor problem in Rhode Island compared to these others. It may be found in nightclubs in larger cities, along with other club drugs like Ecstasy, GHB, LSD and synthetics.

The Dwindling Spiral Will Continue

When a person is addicted, each day could bring disaster. Families know this—especially if their loved one has already been brought back from the edge of death due to an overdose. There’s a phone call they never want to get that tells them their loved one has overdosed. If the person is in the hospital or jail, there’s still a chance that they can still recover from the addiction that imprisons them.

Eventually, addiction will steal everything good from a person’s life: self-respect, integrity, careers or jobs, family and children, valuable possessions, the future. The good news is that the Narconon rehabilitation program can help a person repair the damage and bring back the brightness of life. The future can look hopeful once again. It doesn’t happen overnight. For most people, it takes longer than the 30 days of short-term programs. Each person rebuilds life, self-respect and skills at a different rate. At Narconon, they can take the time they need.

Choosing a Drug Rehab and Addiction Treatment Program

What should the goal be of a drug rehab center? Clean and sober for 30 days? While that might be a good short term goal for many drug or alcohol rehab programs, the individual is often still struggling with a desire to rely on substances to block out pain and loss. At Narconon, the goal is to repair that damage, help a person look at life with a fresh viewpoint, and gain the abilities needed to succeed in that sober new life.

Should the Drug Rehab Location Matter When It Comes to Finding a Solution to Addiction?

Getting a person out of their usual drug-using locales has several benefits. First, they are less likely to run into the drug-using former girlfriend, boyfriend or spouse. They will be distanced from their usual ”drinking buddies” or other substance abusers. They will not have such easy access to people to buy drugs or borrow money from. And they will not be continuously encountering locations that could remind them of their drug-using days such as the place they were arrested, the hospital where they were brought back from an overdose, the house where someone they cared about died. These locations can be so traumatic that just proximity to these places can trigger use again.

Family often intuitively realize this benefit and choose a drug rehab center that’s away from the home environment. This change of environment for the addicted person also gives family members a little time to catch their breath and do some healing themselves.

Our program provides people with the right experiences and surroundings to increase the chances of a successful recovery. The vast majority of students entering our program are from out of state or from other countries.

Narconon New Life Retreat Helps END Addiction and Alcoholism FOR GOOD.

Regaining sobriety requires real changes on the part of the addicted person. Frequent meetings offer support but when a person can lose his or her cravings for drugs or alcohol and become honestly interested in being sober and productive, he can very often put addiction behind him.

New sober living skills will guide a person through the decisions he must make every day—which friends and associates to choose, how to solve problems, how to maintain personal integrity and self-respect. These are just some of the life skills that are the focus of the Narconon program.

No drugs are ever used as part of this program. Instead, nutritional support helps a person through a tolerable withdrawal. More nutrition is strategically employed to enable a person to go through a deep detoxification process that many say helps them leave cravings behind.

The Narconon program is a unique alternative to conventional rehabs—it’s a social education model of rehabilitation. Each person learns the skills they need to enjoy a productive, sober life after rehab. For that reason, we refer to our clients as “students.”

A Narconon Program Graduate is someone:

  • Who has successfully completed all the steps of the Narconon drug rehab program
  • Who has regained his self-respect and overcome his guilt
  • Who understands how to choose safe associates and how to deal with those people who might lead him back into substance abuse
  • Who has learned problem-solving skills so he or she can stay on a sober path
  • Who has created a workable plan for his future
