Alabama Prescription Drug Ring Receives Sentences

Alabama state outline filled with pills

A federal judge sentenced six Alabama residents to prison after they admitted operating a prescription drug ring in Theodore, Alabama. Investigation of the drug ring started in 2009, after a Theodore resident overdosed on the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. Undercover operatives began making purchases of prescription medications from low-level dealers in 2010 and discovered that the dealers were obtaining their medications from Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

This drug ring, mainly consisting of a network of family and friends, received sentences as long as three-and-a-half years and as short as eight months.

Prescription drug abuse is one of the fastest-growing epidemics in the United States. The common misconception in Alabama and other states prescription drugs are less dangerous than street drugs. The truth is that any medication or drug is dangerous when it is abused. Unless a prescription drug is used exactly as prescribed, it can be just as harmful as street drugs.

Among youth in Alabama, the most common drug problem is marijuana but the second most common drug problem is prescription drug abuse.
